Motion analysis lets a coach see what actually changed in a player's mechanics instead of guessing from memory. AI tools track joint positions, release point, arc, and timing on every rep, including the reps taken without you in the gym. The coach still decides what to fix and why; the technology supplies the measurement and the between-session coverage.

A coach with twelve players in the gym can watch one shooter properly. The other eleven take reps that nobody evaluates. Multiply that across a season and most of a player's repetitions are uncoached — which is how bad habits get grooved in a room with a good coach standing in it.

Be clear with yourself and with parents about the division of labour.
- Diagnosis of cause. Software says the release point dropped. Whether that is a conditioning problem, a confidence problem, or a technique problem is a coaching judgement.
- Prioritisation. A report can flag six deviations. Fixing more than one at a time does not work. Choosing which one unlocks the others is coaching.
- Motivation and context. Nothing in a dataset makes a fifteen-year-old want to shoot 200 free throws after a loss.
- Game transfer. Numbers from an empty gym are a starting point, not a verdict.
A practical workflow for a roster.
- Baseline every player once. Ten to twenty makes each, recorded the same way. You now have each player's own reference, not a comparison to an ideal that fits nobody.
- Assign solo work with the tool running. Players train alone with feedback in their ear rather than in silence.
- Review deltas, not raw form. Open each week by looking at what moved since last week. Change is the signal.
- Pick one cue per player per block. Two to three weeks on a single correction, then re-measure.
- Show the player the evidence. Players argue with opinions and accept measurements. This is the underrated benefit.
What to look for in a tool.
- Personal baseline rather than a fixed model of "correct" form. Bodies differ; Curry and Kevin Martin would both fail a strict textbook check.
- Feedback speed. Corrections delivered during the session change the next rep. A report emailed the following day changes nothing.
- No special hardware. If it needs a rig, it will not be used at away gyms or in a player's driveway.
- Something you can read in 30 seconds. Coaches do not read 12-page PDFs for 15 players.

Do I need special cameras for motion analysis?
No. Modern pose estimation runs on a standard phone camera. A phone at roughly hip height, side-on to the shooter, three to five metres away is enough for shooting analysis. Multi-camera rigs are for lab biomechanics, not daily coaching.
Will AI feedback confuse a player I am already coaching?
It will if the cues conflict. Agree the language first: decide the one or two cues the player is working on, and make sure the tool's feedback reinforces them rather than adding a third. One voice, one priority.
Can motion analysis assess a whole team at once?
Not in one clip for shooting mechanics — each player needs their own reps recorded. A practical pattern is a rotation: each player takes a baseline set while the rest of the group runs another station.
